Women's Basketball Falls to Navy in Annapolis

The Mids topped the Broncs, 63-44, on Sunday afternoon

Lawrenceville, NJ – The Rider University women's basketball team fell on the road to Navy, 63-4, in non-conference action on Sunday evening at Alumni Hall.

The Mids (2-0) defeated an opponent from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) for the second straight game, while the Broncs (0-2) fell in their first road game of the 2017-18 campaign.

Navy opened the second quarter on a 14-2 run over the first five and a half minutes of play to turn a two-possession game into a double-digit lead. Sophomore guard Lexi Stover (Malvern, PA/Archbishop Carroll) ended the run with a jumper. In the second quarter, Stover had four of the team's seven points. Following a trey from senior Kamila Hoskova (Brno, Czech Republic/Sportvoni Gymazium Ludvika Danka), the hosts closed the opening half on a 6-0 run to take a 21-point lead at 41-20 into the break.

After the early minutes of play, Navy never trailed. The Mids led for 37:23 en route to the non-conference win.

Hoskova paced the offensive attack for the Broncs with a team-high 19 points on an efficient 7-of-10 shooting from the field and an effective 4-of-4 showing at the charity stripe. She was the lone Rider player in double figures and Hoskova accounted for 43 percent of the team's points. Sophomore forward Lea Favre (Vevey, Switzerland/Lycee Jeanne D'Arc) had her best game as a Bronc with seven points and 10 rebounds.

It was a balanced attack for Navy as three different players scored in double figures led by Sophie Gatzounas with a game-high 20 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Taylor Dunham poured in 13 points thanks to knocking down six free throws, while Hannah Fenske added 10 points and eight boards.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Broncs forced 17 USNA turnovers and registered eight steals.

NOTES & QUOTES
"We are disappointed with the result and our response early in the game with taking the first punch. In the first quarter we were able to score a little bit to keep it event and in the second quarter they came out on fire and we did not respond well. Our attention to detail on the defensive end today was off. Defensively, we weren't clean today." – Rider Head Coach Lynn Milligan

"We got beat on kick outs. It was kind of the perfect storm. We did not do a good job of keeping the ball in front of us today. We played zone in the second half to try and protect a couple people with foul trouble. I liked our effort and rotation in the zone we just didn't finish plays." – Milligan

"We forced 28 turnovers on Friday night and 17 today. We can make some things happen. We just weren't tight on our details today and it cost us. Navy has a lot of weapons, so we weren't focusing on one player, but rather their system." - Milligan

- Hoskova was 3-of-4 for eight points in the first quarter, rest of the team was 2-of-12 for five points.
- Navy hit 7-of-15 in the first quarter, including three shots from three-point range.
- In the second quarter, Rider was 3-of-15 shooting.
- The Broncs have been outscored by 20 points in the second quarter in their first two games.
- Navy has now won all four meetings between the two teams.
- Rider outscored Navy, 24-22, in the second half. The Broncs had their best quarter in the fourth, scoring 14 points 5-fo-13 shooting.
