Siena Upends Volleyball in New York

The Broncs fell to the Saints, 3-1

Loudonville, NY – The Rider University volleyball team fell on the road to Siena, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action. The Broncs and Saints split their regular season series courtesy of the hosts winning by scores of 22-25, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-18.

Rider (14-21, 8-6 MAAC) won the first set against Siena (5-19, 5-8 MAAC) before the Saints rallied to win the next three.

Offensively, junior Hailey Riede (Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley-Demarest) paced the Rider attack with 12 kills. Sophomore middle blocker Evelyn Shanefield (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) chipped in nine kills and a season-high .563 hitting percentage, while junior Perry Williams (Portland, OR/Cleveland) added eight kills (five of which came in the first set). Senior Jennifer Borio (Ridley Park, PA/Padua Academy) contributed seven kills for the Broncs.

Senior setter Veronica Koval (Allentown, PA/Parkland) was solid on both sides of the ball for the guests as she stuffed the stat sheet once again. Koval recorded another double-double thanks to recording 33 assists and 10 digs. Koval has averaged a double-double over the last six MAAC games.  

Defensively, senior tri-captain Emma Aldaya (Prospect Park, PA/Merion Mercy Academy) played well with 17digs. Freshman Brynn Sherbert (Temecula, CA/Great Oak) recorded 15 digs for Rider and sophomore Rachelle Runyon (Aliso Viejo, CA/Aliso Niguel) registered eight digs of her own.

"Despite today's result, going 4-2 on the road in consecutive matches is no easy feat," Rider Head Coach Chris Feliciano said. "We've got to make a push here to continue to get better this week as we've done over the last month or so. Being a Division I student-athlete can be a journey and these young women have showed us they are very capable and can thrive when challenged."

- Rider had 42 kills, 62 digs and eight total blocks.
- Rider has won eight of their last 11 matches.
- The Broncs are 9-10 outside of Lawrenceville this year and 6-7 in true road games. The Broncs have won five of their last seven road conference games.  

Broncs by the Numbers
- Koval has had 25 or more assists in 23 matches this season, including 18 straight. It marked the third match in a row that she has recorded 30 or more assists. Koval is now second in program history with 2,879 career assists.
- Riede has now reached double-digits in kills in a match 19 times this fall, including 18 matches in a row. She has a team-best 296 kills in 2017. In conference play, she is averaging 13 kills per match. She is now ninth all-time in Rider history with 915 career kills.
- Aldaya has recorded 10 or more digs in 19 matches this season, including 10 times in MAAC play.
- The double-double was the 11 of the year for Koval. She is the only Bronc to record a double-double in 2017.
- It marked Sherbert's 11 match with 10 or more digs.

The Broncs return to action on Saturday, November 4, with a home MAAC match versus Quinnipiac that is slated to begin at 12:00 pm.
