LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - As Rider said goodbye to its four seniors on Saturday night, the Broncs found themselves embroiled in a scoreless draw that saw them and visiting Marist each escape with a point. Rider moves to 11-3-2, 6-1-2 MAACÂ while Marist is 7-9-1, 3-5-1 MAACÂ and officially eliminated from MAAC Championship contention.
The chippy and physical game saw 47 fouls, 25 against Marist and 22 for the Broncs, and six yellow cards, two for the Red Foxes and four for Rider, even amidst 24 combined shots. Seniors Elliott Otmani (La Ciotat, France/Bonaparte) and Jose Aguinaga (Madrid, Spain) combined for eight of Rider's ten shots. The closest attempts came in the form of a Sylvain Coco (Nimes, France/University of Montpellier) shot that was saved by Marist goalkeeper Mark Rajovic after both Jose and younger brother Sergio Aguinaga (Madrid, Spain) fed two quick passes right at Coco's feet. A Jose Aguinaga free kick also ended up hitting the post in the 67th minute.
Marist, who needed a win to stay alive in the chase for a MAAC Championship berth, saw two different shots come off the post and one that needed the stretched-out hands of Rider's David Pastuna (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) to seal his fifth shutout of the season.
Quotes and Notes
"First off, a great group of four graduating seniors, we wanted to pull out a win for those guys. But we still sit atop the league, tied with Fairfield and we go up there on Wednesday. We just have to get healthy and get a result on Wednesday. They're a good team, they pulled one out tonight. It's good for the league."
"They were scrappy, they had some chances, we had some chances. Sixth overtime game this year, we haven't lost in our last 15 overtime games in our last four years and I'm proud of that."
"Those guys finished with a four-year record of 47-20, a combined 3.3 GPA. These guys continued what the last two classes built upon and we are so lucky to have them" -Â Head Coach Charlie Inverso
