Lock Haven Bests Field Hockey in Shootout

The Broncs fell in the shootout 1-0 after 100 scoreless minutes

Lawrenceville, NJ – The Rider University field hockey team fell to visiting Lock Haven, 1-0, in a shootout following a scoreless 100 minutes of action on Friday night at Ben Cohen Field.

In their final home regular season contest of 2017, the Broncs (8-9) played their second consecutive overtime contest, while the Bald Eagles (10-7) have now won two of their last three.

It took six shootout attempts for each squad for a winner to be crowned. Lock Haven started the shootout with successful attempt from Tamia Roach. After Roach found the back of the cage the next eight players to go were unable to get it past the goalkeepers.

Down to their final attempt, the Broncs turned to graduate transfer Maria Madsen (Farmingdale, NJ/Hopewell High School/Richmond). Madsen saw her first shot stopped before she converted the rebound just before the clock hit zero.

In the second time through, Roach scored after the Bald Eagle goalkeeper made a save to give the visitors the victory.

Freshman Lena Vandam (Brasschaat, Belgium) was stellar once again for Rider in the cage. She turned aside a career-high 14 shots in a losing effort.

Notes & Quotes
"I was really pleased with the way we played today except for the fact that we did not score again," Rider Head Coach Lori Hussong said. "We toughened up as the game went on. They were a good passing team and had some really skilled players on the field, but I feel like we matched their intensity early on and in overtime. Overall we were happy with how our defense played."

"Lena is a fantastic goalie," Hussong said of her netminder. "Every game she gets better. We rely heavily on her and our three backs to keep us in each game and if she's not on the field maybe the game is a blowout. Having her in the cage gives us a boost and some confidence that if we make a mistake there's someone back there that can make a save."

- Freshmen Lena Vandam and Brittany Romanczuk were honored by the MAAC with weekly awards as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. Vandam was tabbed as the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week for the third time and Romanczuk was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week for the first time in her young career.
- With Monmouth's victory against Bryant, the Broncs clinched a berth in the MAAC Tournament. It marks the 18th straight season in which Rider has participated in postseason play.
- Rider's last three non-conference games have all gone to overtime.
- Rider is 2-8 in one-goal games in 2017.
- The Broncs are 0-3 in overtime this year.
- Lock Haven held a 24-9 advantage in shots.

- The last four games between the Broncs and the Bald Eagles have all been decided by one goal.
