Women's Soccer Equalizes Late Against Manhattan

Michelle Iacono scores in 85th minute for road point

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - Senior Michelle Iacono (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) scored the equalizer in the 85th minute to get the Rider University women's soccer team a road point against Manhattan on Saturday afternoon. The draw sends the Broncs to 4-9-3 (4-3-3 MAAC) while Manhattan moves to 8-6-3 (6-2-2 MAAC).

The Broncs got off to another strong start as they out-shot the Jaspers 9-2, which includes a 3-0 shot on goal differential in favor of Rider. After a scoreless first half, Manhattan's Erica Modena scooped up and blasted a rebounded ball in front of the Rider net to give the Jaspers a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute. In the midst of a second half that saw shots favor Manhattan 9-8, senior Shannon Kelly (Mineola, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) fed Iacono for the equalizer off a long-range laser that forced overtime.

Overtime was relatively quiet as the Broncs had both corner kicks and all three shots of the extra two periods.

Quotes and Notes

"Another very good team performance today where we controlled possession for large chunks of the game and had a high number of shots on goal. Scoring goals is the toughest part of the game and with all our injuries this year falling to attack players, it leaves putting the ball in the back of the net at times a challenge against well-organized defenses."

"Fortunately, Michelle is having a season to remember and she scored a great goal to tie the game up. Every aspect of the team is playing well, so it will be exciting to see what this group can do in the postseason." -- Rider Head Coach Drayson Hounsome

  • This is the third straight regular season draw against Manhattan for the Broncs, who remain tied in the series, 8-8-6, in 22 all-time meetings.

  • Iacono's goal is her team-leading eighth of the season, which gives her a team-high 23 points in 2017.

Broncs By The Numbers

  • Freshman goalkeeper Carmen Carbonell (Valencia, Spain/Guadalaviar School) had three saves against the Jaspers. She has not given up more than one goal in her last 11 games.

  • The Broncs out-shot the Jaspers 20-11 for the game, including an 8-4 advantage with shots on goal.

  • Both teams had seven corner kicks on Saturday, with Manhattan committing 13 fouls to Rider's six.
