Late Goal Sends Siena Past Women's Soccer, 1-0

Saints score in 81st minute

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Siena's Madison Vasquez scored in the 81st minute to send the Saints past the Rider University women's soccer team, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon at Ben Cohen Field. The loss snaps a four-game unbeaten streak as the Broncs slip to 4-9-2 (4-3-2 MAAC). Siena improves to 10-7-0 (6-4-0 MAAC).

The Broncs came out strong in the first half, outshooting the Saints, 13-4, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. But the Broncs couldn't slip a shot past Saints goalkeeper Taylor Dorado, who made eight saves in the half and 11 for the game. The Broncs' Carmen Carbonell (Valencia, Spain/Guadalaviar) was equal to the task, making four first-half saves.

However, Siena's lone second-half shot found its way into the back of the net. Following a long cross along the goal line, the ball bounced around in the box to Darby D'Angelo, who left it off for Vasquez for the score. Rider peppered Siena with six more shots in the second half, but again could not get one past Dorado.

Quotes & Notes
"We don't control the outcomes of games. We can do our best to put in a solid performance and I think it was a solid performance. The first 25 minutes I thought was quality. We had six shots on target in the first 10 minutes. If two of those go in, it's a whole different game. It was a solid performance against a good team. Every year we play them, it's always a close game."

"Obviously we've got to convert those chances. It was the first time we've seen a 4-4-2 in that setup. When they got going, we were chasing space a little bit. But that's the tactics of the game. Disappointed with the outcome because if we'd have got three points today, we would've secured a top five finish. But not necessarily disappointed with the performance. I thought we played well, competed hard and gave it our best shot to win." – Rider Head Coach Drayson Hounsome

- Siena cut the Broncs' lead in the all-time series to 10-8-4 with their first win over the Broncs in the last seven years. Rider had been 5-0-2 in the last seven, covering six year since Siena's last win over Rider in 2010.
- Rider was held scoreless for the first time in five games (Sept. 27 at Monmouth) and just the third time in MAAC play.

- The Broncs outshot Siena, 19-5, with an 11-5 edge in shots on goal.
- Rider took three corner kicks to the Saints' two.
