PRINCESS ANNE, MD—The Rider University volleyball team finished the UMES Tournament 1-3, losing to Navy and the host Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday.
Rider was sunk by Navy 25-18, 25-21, 25-22 and the Hawks flew over the Broncs 25-21, 25-17, 25-22.
“We couldn't get into a rhythm offensively,” said head coach Christopher Feliciano about the match against UMES.
For Rider against UMES, sophomore Savannah Logan (Jupiter, FL/Benjamin) had 10 kills and attacked .250 with junior Veronica Koval (Allentown, PA/Parkland) adding 21 assists, nine digs and four kills.
Logan led the Broncs with seven kills against Navy with Koval contributing 15 assists and two aces.
“I thought that our team played really well in set one all the way through,” Feliciano said. “In sets two and three, we battled, kept our heads down and grinded. Navy is a very deep and athletic squad and we were with them every step of the way. The performance is something we will build on as we continue to grow as a team.”
Junior Emma Aldaya (Prospect Park, PA/Merion Mercy Academy) had a team-high 15 digs against the Mids.
Rider split two matches in the tournament on Friday, losing to American 3-0 before defeating South Carolina State in straight sets.
“It's a great positive to see tough competition this early in the season,” Feliciano said about the tournament. “However we have to seize the moment when we have momentum.”
Senior Ryan Ackermann (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) was named to the all-tournament team on Sunday afternoon. Ackermann averaged 2.50 kills per set and 1.42 digs per set in the four matches, including 13 kills and no errors while hitting .619 in Rider's win over South Carolina State.
The Broncs travel to the Boston College tournament September 9-10.
