“The team played extremely well today, against a tough Monmouth team,” said head coach Doug Potkay. “I can't say enough about how hard they train and practice.”
For the Broncs, sophomore Vanessa Canda won 6-1, 7-6 (4) at first singles and teamed up with freshman Cyd Melendez for a 5-1 victory at first doubles. Melendez also won in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5 at second singles.
Also for Rider, freshman Amanda Binder was a 6-1, 6-4 winner at fourth singles and junior Danielle Scrudato scored a 6-0, 6-2 victory at fifth singles.
Binder and sophomore Caitlin Gardner teamed up for a 6-0 win at second doubles.
“Freshmen Cyd (Melendez) and Amanda (Binder) are gaining more confidence in every match they play,” Potkay added. “Danielle (Scrudato) attacked her opponent with her strong forehand shots and Vanessa (Canda) did well with her all around style of play. I also can't say enough about our doubles teams. They are all playing with extreme confidence.”
Monmouth was also involved in Rider's last two-match winning streak which came during the fall of 2011 when the Broncs defeated Rutgers Camden and the Hawks on September 25 and 27.
The Bronc women play at the Villanova Invitational September 30-October 2.
