LAWRENCEVILLE—Led by a three set, come-from-behind win from sophomore Vanessa Canda (Jersey City/McNair Academic HS) at first singles, the Rider University women's tennis team won at home Saturday.
“The women played great today!” exclaimed head coach Doug Potkay. “Vanessa came back after losing the first set by winning a close second and dominating the tiebreaker.”
Freshmen Cyd Melendez (Cayey, PR/Colegio La Merced) and Amanda Binder (Princeton/West Windsor Plainsboro HS North) both won their first collegiate tennis matches in straight sets at second and fourth singles respectively.
Also victorious for the Broncs at singles were sophomore Caitlin Gardner (Fishers, IN/Fishers) at third singles (6-4, 6-2) and junior Olivia Banks (Baltimore, MD/Franklin) at sixth singles (6-0, 6-2).
Melendez and junior Danielle Scrudato (Califon/Voorhees) both double bageled their singles opponents with 6-0, 6-0 straight set wins. Both players also won their doubles matches with identical 6-0 scores to secure the doubles point for the Broncs.
Rider hosts Monmouth University for Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match on September 27 at 3pm.
