Hofstra University 5, Rider University 1
HEMPSTEAD, NY—The Hofstra University field hockey team jumped out to a 4-0 lead and cruised to a 5-1 non-conference win over Rider University on Saturday afternoon.
“Hofstra had some beautiful passing combinations and executed their corner set pieces that led to their goals,” said head coach Lori Hussong.
For Rider (3-4), freshman Daane Koch (The Netherlands) continued her strong play, scoring an unassisted goal with just under 15 minutes left in the game.
A two-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honoree, Koch has scored in four straight games and leads Rider with five goals and 13 points.
Rider out-shot the Pride 26-9 and held an 8-2 penalty corner advantage but only got one past Hofstra goalie Lauren Saltus who made 17 saves.
“We had some great chances in the circle and we need to finish and put the ball in the goal,” Lori Hussong added. “Shooting the ball 26 times should result in more goals than one on the day.”
Colby Hussong, daughter of Rider head coach Lori Hussong and Bronc assistant coach Dan Hussong assisted on the second Hofstra goal, which came 15 minutes into the game. A senior captain, Colby played 60 of the 70 minutes in the game.
Rider and Hofstra have now met 25 times in the series that began in 1981 with the Pride now holding a 13-12 advantage.
Hofstra won 2-1 over Rider in 2015. Rider and Hofstra met in 2014 when the Pride won 6-3 in a game that saw Rider battle back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the score. In 2013 the Broncs scored 8:05 into the first overtime to defeat the Pride 2-1. The Broncs won at Hofstra 2-0 in 2012. Hofstra won 5-2 in 2011 and 4-3 in 2010. Rider defeated the Pride 1-0 in 2009 with Hofstra winning 2-1 in 2008.
Rider travels to Philadelphia to take on La Salle University on September 21. The Broncs return home on September 23 to face St. Francis (Pa.) at 4:30pm on Ben Cohen Field.
