PROVIDENCE, RI—The Rider University field hockey team lost its second game in a row, falling at Providence College 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in Rhode Island.
Trailing 1-0 after a Providence goal 6:22 into the game, Rider (2-3) tied the score with freshman Daane Koch (The Netherlands), scoring her second of the season, eight minutes into the contest on a reverse shot from the top of the circle.
Providence (4-2) took a 2-1 lead at 22:52, knocking in a loose ball at the right post and the Friars led by one at intermission.
The Friars got an insurance goal with just under 21 minutes remaining on a tip-in during a penalty corner for the final score.
Rider out-shot Providence 10-9 but the Friars held a 9-5 penalty corner advantage.
“Providence was fast and skilled and took advantage of their opportunities better than us,” said head coach Lori Hussong.
Freshman goalie Emily Gilligan (West Deptford) entered the game after the first Providence goal and played the final 63 minutes, allowing two goals.
Rider is now 0-3 all-time against Providence. The teams last met on September 11, 2004 with the Friars winning 5-3 in Rhode Island. The series began on August 31, 2003 with Rider losing 5-4 in Lawrenceville.
Rider hosts Villanova on Tuesday at 4:30pm on Ben Cohen Field.
