Brown University 2, Rider University 1
PROVIDENCE, RI—The Brown University field hockey team battled back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Rider University 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game.
The Bears broke a 1-1 tie with just under 18 minutes remaining on a penalty corner.
“Brown out hustled us and beat us to every ball,” said head coach Lori Hussong. “Our team needs to play with more intensity and know their positions and execute their jobs as a team and not individually.”
Rider (2-2) took a 1-0 lead just 4:16 into the game when junior Allison Baligian (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) scored her first goal of the season, converting a rebound into the upper part of the goal.
Baligian now has 22 career goals and her 46 career points are 24th best all-time at Rider.
Brown (1-2) tied the score 1-1 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the opening half, on a right side shot after a pass at the top of the circle.
Freshman goalie Voirrey Baker (Ramsey, British Isles) faced six shots and did not make a save.
Rider out-shot the Bears 14-6 but Brown held a 3-1 penalty corner advantage.
Brown leads the all-time series 2-0. The teams last met on September 8, 2013 in Providence, Rhode Island when the Bears won 3-2, scoring the game-winner 3:34 into the second half.
The Broncs stay in Rhode Island and face Providence on Sunday at 1pm.
“We know it's going to take time for us to build this year as we have a mixture of young players and veterans on the field,” Hussong added. “We will continue to work hard and improve in order to be ready for conference play.”
Rider returns home to play Villanova on Ben Cohen Field on Tuesday, September 13 at 4:30pm.
