SMITHFIELD, RI—The Rider University volleyball team dropped the final match of the 2016 opening tournament, losing to the host Bulldogs of Bryant University 3-0 on Saturday at the Hampton
Inn-vitational.
Rider (1-2) lost in straight sets 25-17, 25-23, 25-13.
“It's a work in progress,” said head coach Christopher Feliciano. “The team needs to learn that no lead is safe and that we have work for every point. We opened up sets one and two with big leads and put it in cruise control. It's one loss but I see a lot of growth opportunities.”
Rider gave up leads of 5-1 in the opening set and 6-1 in the second set.
Freshman Evelyn Shanefield (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 1.10 kills and 1.10 blocks per set for the three matches. Shanefield played 10 of 12 sets and attacked .269, accounting for 18 team points.
Against Bryant, junior Emma Aldaya (Prospect Park, PA/Merion Mercy Academy) led the Broncs with 15 digs with sophomore Hailey Riede (Haworth/Northern Valley-Demarest) adding seven kills.
Junior Veronica Koval (Allentown, PA (Parkland) had 13 assists and freshman Devyn Holland (Corona, CA/Santiago) compiled 11 assists for Rider.

The Bulldogs held a 56-40 dig advantage with Rider making seven service errors and six reception errors.
