Marist College 4, Rider University 1
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—The Broncs sent just 29 batters to the plate, two over the minimum, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference loss to Marist Sunday. “We just didn't hit,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis. “It was one of those days.”
With the win, Marist (24-22, 13-8 MAAC) sweeps the series three games to none.
Rider (16-32, 8-13 MAAC) trailed 2-0 in the fifth inning before junior Lee Lipinski (Glen Arm, MD/Calvert) broke up the perfect game with a leadoff single.
Rider senior James Locklear (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) hit a solo home run in the seventh inning for the final score.
Marist starting pitcher Sean Keenan pitched eight innings, striking out 10 without a walk. “He came right at us with the fast ball and changed speeds well,” Davis said. “He settled in, got into a rhythm and at one point struck out six in a row.”
Marist took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a two-out home run by freshman Frankie Gregoire. Gregoire hit another home run in the sixth inning to give the Red Foxes a 3-0 lead.
“We only gave up four runs in nine innings,” Davis said. “We have to find a way to score some runs. Two hits isn't going to get you much.”
Rider plays at La Salle on Tuesday.
The final series of the season is May 19-20 when Rider hosts Saint Peter's.
