Broncs Fall at Seton Hall

Seton Hall University 10, Rider University 4

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ—The Broncs once again had one big inning, but it was not enough as Rider lost at Seton Hall Wednesday night.

Rider (16-29) scored four runs in the second inning on five hits, a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch to take a 4-2 lead. “We really didn't do anything after that,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis. “We seemed lackluster.”

Rider sophomore Brian Uliana (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) and junior Dalton Mayberry (Chadds Ford, PA/Garnett Valley) hit RBI singles.

Freshman Richie Tecco (Drexel Hill, PA/Monsignor Bonner) hit a sacrifice fly to give Rider a 3-2 lead.

Rider freshman Jack Finn (Ellicott City, MD/Calvert Hall) had two of Rider's six hits. “He had a couple of good at bats,” Davis said.

Junior Tyler Kaiser (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and junior Mike Volaski (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard) also had hits for Rider.

Seton Hall (32-16) scored three runs in the sixth inning on four hits, including a bunt single, a stolen base, and a sac bunt to take a 7-4 lead. “Seton Hall is good,” Davis said.  “They put pressure on you all game.”

The Pirates stole 12 bases.

Seton Hall added two runs in the eighth inning on four hits to take a 10-4 lead.

The Pirates cut the lead to 4-3 in the second inning and tied the score at 4-4 in the third inning on a bases loaded hit batsman.

Seton Hall scored two runs in the first inning on three hits.

Rider used 10 different pitchers.  Freshman Dylan Simcik (Newtown, PA/Holy Ghost Prep) pitched an inning and a third without allowing a hit or run. “I thought Simcik threw the ball pretty well,” Davis said.

Seton Hall is now 21-5 at home this year.

Rider was rained out at Seton Hall last year. The Pirates came to Rider in 2014 and beat the Broncs 4-3. The last time Rider beat Seton Hall was 2010. Rider and Seton Hall have now met 64 times since the series began in 1947, with Rider winning 22.

Rider hosts Marist for a three-game MAAC series this weekend beginning with a 12 noon doubleheader on Saturday. “We'll move on to this weekend and get ready for Marist,” Davis said.   “Very important games.”
