Princeton University 7, Rider University 2

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—The Broncs lost to cross-town rival Princeton Wednesday.

The Tigers scored three runs in the first inning on a three-run home run by Nick Hernandez, who had three of the Tigers' hits.

Princeton added two runs in the third inning on four hits to take a 5-0 lead.

Rider (11-23) managed just four hits, while Princeton (18-14) collected 11 hits off of seven Rider pitchers.

“It is tough to fall behind 5-0 and only get four hits,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis

Sophomore Nick Margevicius (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius), junior Vincenzo Aiello (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville), sophomore Mike Diorio (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) and junior Josh Sharik (Ewing, NJ/Plumstead Christian) each threw a shutout inning, while freshman Anthony Arneth (Pine Beach, NJ/Central Regional) and sophomore Paul Sparano (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) each allowed an unearned run in an innings work.

“The bullpen was good today,” Davis said. “Mike did his job, Anthony did okay. We got what we expected out of Nick and Vin.”

The Broncs got on the board in the third inning thanks to a pair of Princeton errors, and scored in the fifth inning on a walk, a stolen base and an RBI single by sophomore Jake Bender (Ellicot, Md./Marriotts Ridge).

Senior James Locklear (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert), sophomore Christian Estevez (River Edge, NJ/River Dell) and junior Mike Volaski (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard) also collected hits for Rider.

The hit by Volaski extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

This was the 51st meeting between Rider and Princeton, with the Broncs winning 28, including the last four before Wednesday.

Rider travels to Niagara this weekend for a three-game MAAC series beginning with a 12 noon doubleheader on Saturday. “It is important for us to play well this weekend,” Davis said. “This is a big series for us.”
