LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—The Broncs scored five runs in the last four innings but it was not enough to defeat Canisius in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Sunday.

“We kept battling,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.  “I don't think that we quit.”

Canisius (17-18, 8-4 MAAC) collected 20 hits off of seven Rider (11-22, 3-6 MAAC) pitchers on Sunday to win the series two games to one. “We haven't been able to win the third game of a series yet,” Davis said. “We need to find the right ingredients to do that.”

The defending MAAC Champion, Canisius scored four runs in the first inning on three hits and a Rider error.  “It is frustrating to come into the game knowing that it's an important game and to fall behind that quickly,” Davis said. “I would have liked to see a little bit better performance from our guys on a day they knew the importance of the game.”

The Golden Griffins added two runs in the fifth inning and broke the game open with six runs in the sixth inning on five hits, two walks and a hit batter. “That took the competitive edge off of the game,” Davis said.

Bronc junior Dalton Mayberry (Chadds Ford, PA/Garnett Valley) had three of Rider's seven hits and also had a pair of RBI. “Dalton swung the bat,” Davis said, “although it is not good when one guy has almost half of the team's hits.”

Senior James Locklear (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) hit a triple and junior Mike Volaski (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard) singled to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.

Junior Tyler Kaiser (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and sophomore Christian Estevez (River Edge, NJ/River Dell) also collected hits.

Rider hosts Princeton Wednesday at 3:30.
