Rider Battles Army West Point

LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider University softball team is hoping the cooler weather will warm up the bats as the Broncs battle Army West Point in a non-conference doubleheader at Herb and Joan Young Field.
Due to the forecast of inclement weather later in the weekend, the games will now be played, beginning at 1pm on SATURDAY, March 19.
Rider (1-14) just completed an eight-game road trip in the 85 degree weather of sunny Florida where the Broncs played four games decided by one run, including three that ended with 1-0 scores.
While the pitching held its own with an earned run average at 2.94, the Bronc offense continued to struggle with a team batting average of .176 at the Rebel Spring Games.
Rider was led in Florida by senior Dana Sensi (Allentown) who had a team-high seven hits and senior Kim Valdes (Jupiter, Fla.) led the squad with a .333 batting average recording five hits in 15 at-bats.
Army West Point was in Clearwater, Florida this past week with the Black Knights winning four of six games and Army split a doubleheader at Penn on Friday afternoon to improve to 12-11 on the season.
The Black Knights will have a familiar face on the bench as Rider grad Gina McCool is in her first season as an assistant coach.
McCool, who batted .326 as a senior in 2015, graduated as a 193-game veteran at shortstop and her 147 hits were tied for 23rd best all-time at Rider.
