Iona College 67, Rider University 48
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Game
LAWRENCEVILLE—First place Iona College jumped out to a 28-5 lead in the first 15:06 of the game and held Rider University to 2-21 from the field over that span, sending the Broncs to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference loss on Sunday afternoon.
“We didn't shoot the ball well but we didn't start the game well defensively,” said head coach Lynn Milligan. “We were more prepared than we showed and we got beat to a lot of loose balls. We have to start games better defensively.”
For Rider (4-18, 1-12 MAAC), junior Julia Duggan (Marmora/Ocean City) had 13 points and seven rebounds with junior Robin Perkins (Willingboro/Trenton Catholic) also adding 13 points.
For Iona, which has won six straight, Marina Lizarazu had 18 points with Joy Adams adding 12 points and 20 rebounds.
Iona (16-9, 12-2 MAAC) eventually built a 35-9 lead and the Gaels led 38-16 at the half.
Trailing 61-35, Rider used an 8-0 run, three points each by Perkins and Duggan to cut the deficit to 18 with 3:19 remaining.
A three-pointer by sophomore Kamila Hoskova (Czech Republic) got the Broncs to within 65-48 with 1:27 left in the final quarter. Hoskova finished with seven points and seven rebounds, all seven on the offensive glass.
Also for Rider, sophomore C'quoya Haughton (Albany, N.Y./Stoneleigh Burnham Prep) had 10 rebounds.
Iona swept the season series after defeating the Broncs 59-46 in New Rochelle, New York on December 4.
The Gaels lead the all-time series 27-15.
During the game and at a free all-sport clinic prior to the contest, Rider celebrated the 30th year of National Girls and Women in Sports Day and over 800 fans were in Alumni Gym for the event.
Rider travels to Saint Peter's University on Tuesday evening for a MAAC game at 7pm.
