Wagner College 5, Rider University 2
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—The Broncs saw their two-match winning streak come to an end with a loss to Wagner Tuesday afternoon.
“Although our winning streak ended, our players played extremely well,” said Rider head coach Doug Potkay. “The team came out strong in doubles but we struggled in singles. Wagner was just more consistent and we made too many unforced errors.”
Wagner (3-1) won five of the six singles matches.
Rider (2-2) won two of the three doubles matches.
The Broncs were led by freshman Cyd Melendez (Cayey, PR/Colegio La Merced), who won at second singles and first doubles with sophomore Vanessa Canda (Jersey City/McNair Academic HS). “Cyd won again for us, winning a hard fought third set tiebreaker,” Potkay said.
Freshman Amanda Binder (Princeton/West Windsor Plainsboro HS North) and sophomore Caitlin Gardner (Fishers, IN/Fishers) won 6-2 at second doubles.
“Our first and second doubles played with a lot of confidence and great teamwork,” Potkay said.
“At second doubles Amanda and Caitlin pounced on their opponents very quickly to take a 5-2 lead.”
Rider competes at Quinnipiac Saturday.
