RIVERDALE, NY—The Broncs and Jaspers tied in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Wednesday. “It was disappointing because we were in complete control until we gave up the goal,” said Rider head coach Charlie Inverso.
Rider junior Elliott Otmani (LaCiotat, France) scored on an assist from junior Jose Aguinaga (Madrid, Spain) just one minute into the second half to give Rider a 1-0 lead.
It was Aguinaga's fifth assist of the season and Otmani's 10th career goal.
The Jaspers tied the score in the 77th minute.
Rider (7-3-2, 2-1-2 MAAC) out-shot Manhattan (1-9-2, 1-3-1 MAAC) 16-9, including 6-3 in shots on goal. “We had enough chances, we just didn't finish them off,” Inverso said. “Realistically this could have been a 4-1 game. Last year (when Rider won the MAAC Championship) we finished. Tonight we didn't.”
Rider senior goalkeeper Ryan Baird (Plainfield, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) made two saves. “He had one save to make late in the game and it was a great save,” Inverso said.
Rider won the last two meetings with Manhattan, both by a 1-0 score. The last time Manhattan defeated the Broncs was in 2012, a 2-0 Jasper win at Rider.
The Broncs now hold a 12-4-6 advantage in the series with Manhattan that began in 1997.
Rider plays at Marist Saturday night. “It is a game we have to win,” Inverso said.
