Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Game
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—Playing without junior Robin Perkins (Willingboro/Trenton Catholic), the leading scorer in the MAAC, the Rider University women's basketball team lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Marist College on Sunday afternoon in Poughkeepsie.
Perkins, who had scored in double-digits in each game this season, missed the game due to a lower body injury.
Rider (3-9, 0-3 MAAC) was led by junior Julia Duggan (Marmora/Ocean City) with 15 points and six rebounds before she fouled out with 1:04 left in the game.
“It's mixed emotions,” said head coach Lynn Milligan. “We played hard and followed the game plan for the most part. We played solid defense and we just need to put some more points on the board.”
Marist improved to 3-0 in the MAAC and 4-9 overall, led by senior Sydney Coffey who had 23 points, 19 in the second half with sixth-year senior Tori Jarosz adding 22 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks.
“The defense, playing against Marist's half court, we played solid,” Milligan said. “We just had a couple breakdowns and those points added up.”
Trailing 27-20, Rider opened the third quarter, out-scoring the Red Foxes 11-7, six points by Duggan, cutting the deficit to 34-31 with 4:19 left after junior Taylor Wentzel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) converted a conventional three-point play. Wentzel finished with those three points and added two rebounds and two steals in 29 minutes of play.
Rider was held without a point for the first 3:17 of the final quarter before freshman Lexi Stover (Malvern, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) banked in a three-pointer, cutting the Bronc deficit back to single digits at 50-43. Stover finished with six points in 12 minutes off the bench.
Rider's defense gave the Red Foxes all they could handle in the opening quarter, holding Marist to only eight points as the Broncs led 9-8 at the end of the opening 10 minutes, led by four points from sophomore C'quoya Haughton (Albany, N.Y./Stoneleigh Burnham Prep). The Bronc defense held Marist to 0-5 shooting from the field to open the game.
Making her second start of the season, Haughton finished with six points and seven rebounds in 22 minutes of action.
Trailing 11-10, Marist used a 7-0 run to open up a 17-11 lead with 5:33 left before halftime.
Stover hit a three-pointer to get Rider within 17-14 halfway through the second period and the Broncs went four for four from the free throw line in the final 1:41 of the quarter to go into intermission trailing 27-20.
Also for the Broncs, sophomore Kamila Hoskova (Czech Republic) finished with six points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals in 34 minutes of play.
Rider was out-shot 43 percent (21-49) to 32 percent (20-63).
The Broncs held a 41-35 rebounding advantage, including 16-8 on the offensive glass.
Marist leads the all-time series 41-13 and the Red Foxes have won 26 in a row over the Broncs.
The teams meet again at Rider on January 30.
Rider travels to defending MAAC champion Quinnipiac University on Wednesday evening.
