LORETTO, Pa.—The Rider University field hockey team lost for just the second time this season, falling 3-0 at Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game.

“It wasn't our day today,” said head coach Lori Hussong.  “We opened up the game very flat and Saint Francis came right down and scored.  I don't think we gave out best effort.”

The Red Flash jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 37 seconds into the game, breaking through the Bronc defense and converting a shot from the top of the circle.

Saint Francis (4-3) made it 2-0 with 5:30 left before intermission after a scrum in front ended with a loose ball in the back of the cage.

The Red Flash scored on a rebound with just over 15 minutes left in the game for the final score.

Rider (6-2) sophomore Hannah Isaacs (Piscataway) made her first start of the season in goal and played the opening 29:30, making three saves, while allowing two goals.

Senior goalie Joelle Prettyman (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) played the final 40:30, making two saves.

Despite holding an 11-7 penalty corner advantage over the Red Flash, Rider was out-shot 12-11.

“We had a lot of scoring opportunities, especially in the first half but couldn't get it going,” Hussong said.  “It's hard to play from behind.  Saint Francis is a very good team.”

The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for Rider.

“The defense did not play well today,” Hussong added.  “Saint Francis was very skilled and aggressive and they played better than we did.”

This was Rider's second loss to the Red Flash in 17 games.  Former conference rivals in the Northeast Conference, Rider and Saint Francis (Pa.) last met in 2014 when the Red Flash won for the first time in the series, scoring a 3-2 overtime victory on Ben Cohen Field.
Rider travels to Colgate on Sunday, September 27.
