LAWRENCVILLE—Freshman Vanessa Canda (Jersey City/McNair Academic HS) won her first collegiate match but it wasn't enough as the Rider University women's tennis team lost 6-1 to Wagner College in the fall 2015 season opener on Wednesday afternoon.

“The women played extremely well against a tough Wagner team,” said head coach Doug Potkay.  “Vanessa with a come back in the second set was great.”

Playing at second singles, Canda won her opening set 6-3 and trailing 5-2 in the second set, roared back to win 7-6, 10-5 in the tie breaker to clinch the match.

“The win was awesome,” Canda said after the match.  “I was really nervous before the match.  I played well.  I tried to get after every ball and put the ball deep.  That seemed to frustrate my opponent.”

Also for the Broncs, sophomore Kelli Swanson (Wenonah/GCIT), playing in her first match after transferring from Rowan University, won her opening set at fifth singles, 6-4 before losing 6-1 and 10-5 in the third set tie-breaker.

Both the Rider men's and women's tennis teams travel to Temple University for a non-conference match on Saturday, September 19.
