Riede All-Tournament

BALTIMORE, Md.—The Rider University volleyball team dropped two matches on the final day of the seventh annual Maddie Bingaman Memorial Invitational, hosted by Maryland Baltimore County on Saturday.

“We didn't have a good day of volleyball,” said head coach Christopher Feliciano.

Rider (5-6) won the opening set against Coppin State (1-6) 25-15 before losing 26-24, 25-21, 25-18 and against Fordham, the Broncs lost 25-20, 25-10, 25-22.

“We won a great opening set against Coppin, Feliciano said.  “We then underestimated them and allowed CSU to gain the momentum and we couldn't recover.  Everyone has to pull their own weight and unfortunately we didn't do that.”

Freshman Hailey Riede (Haworth/Northern Valley-Demarest) had nine kills and attacked .421 for the Broncs against the Rams of Fordham with sophomore Emma Aldaya (Prospect Park, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) adding nine digs and senior Brandie Hill compiled eight digs.

Riede attacked .354 and averaged 2.92 kills per set and had eight blocks to earn all-tournament honors, her second all-tournament recognition of the season after being honored at Maryland Eastern Shore on August 29.

“Riede had a solid week,” Feliciano said.  “She is making it very clear to us that she is going to be a big part of our offense.  She played some outstanding defense at the net and we are happy and excited for this season and the next years that follow.”

In the opening match against Coppin State, which featured 31 ties and 18 lead changes, Riede had 13 kills and attacked .367 with Hill adding 19 assists and nine digs.

Sophomore Veronica Koval (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) also had a strong match against CSU with 21 assists and nine digs with junior Ryan Ackermann (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) compiling 12 kills and 11 digs.  Koval had 16 assists and six digs against Fordham.

Rider went 1-2 in the tournament, defeating Morgan State 3-2 on Friday.

“When you have such a large group of newcomers, there are going to be moments of lessons to be learned and today was one of them,” Feliciano said.  The talent and ability are there but we need to tighten some things up quickly.  We need to be prepared more mentally after making a mistake and have a better understanding of the flow of the match.  We need to just go out and let it fly.  We have moments that we do that and moments where we take one step forward and two steps back.”

The Broncs travel to Saint Peter's University for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match on September 16 at 7pm.
