BALTIMORE, Md.—Both the Rider University men's and women's tennis teams lost a non-conference match at Loyola Maryland on Monday afternoon.
For the Rider men, sophomore Chanton Phan (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) split his first two sets at third singles before losing the third set 7-6 in a tie-breaker 10-7.
“Chanton played a smart match,” head coach Doug Potkay said. “He changed strategy after losing the first set and attacked his opponent's backhand more frequently. He was down 6-1 in the tiebreaker, tied it at 6-6 and ended up losing 10-7.”
Phan and sophomore Ahmed Al-Shawafi (Pennington/Hopewell Valley Central) won six games at first doubles before losing 8-6.
For the Bronc women, sophomore Kerrin Toner (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) won three games at first singles before losing 6-2, 6-1.
“The women lost to a very experienced squad,” Potkay said. “Loyola played with a big forehand shot and was aggressive in their play.”
Toner and senior Michelle Caravaglio (Manalapan/Freehold) won three games at first doubles before losing 8-3.
The Rider women host Lafayette College on Tuesday at 3pm and the Bronc men travel to Temple University for a non-conference match at 3pm Wednesday.
