STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.—The Rider University women's tennis team gave Wagner College a battle, especially in doubles play before losing a non-conference match in Staten Island on Wednesday afternoon.

The first doubles team of Michelle Caravaglio (Manalapan/Freehold) and sophomore Kerrin Toner (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and the second doubles team of freshman Danielle Scrudato (Califon/Voorhees) and freshman Montana Morris (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) both won five games before losing their respective matches 8-5.

“I'm proud of the way the team played today,” said head coach Doug Potkay.  “They ran down every ball and made Wagner work for every point.”

In singles play, Morris had the best match of the day, winning the opening set at sixth singles 6-2 before losing 6-4 and 10-3 in the super tiebreaker.

“Montana played a three-set thriller,” Potkay said.  “She won the opening set by playing steady and forcing her opponent into errors.  She was tired out by the end of the second set and lost the super tiebreaker in the third set.”

The women's final competition of the season is a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match against Manhattan College on Saturday.
