Duke University 11, Rider University 3
DURHAM, NC—The Broncs lost a doubleheader at Duke Sunday. “The one good thing about the weekend is that we played all the games,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis. “We got almost everybody in the games, and that's what we needed to do.”
Senior Nick Richter (Fox River Grove, Ill./Cary-Grove) had three hits on the day, while senior Eric Strano (Robbinsville) had a single and a double.
In the first game a double and a single in the bottom of the 11th inning gave Duke its second straight 11-inning victory over the Broncs.
Junior Lee Lipinski (Glen Arm, MD/Calvert) hit a solo home run in the second inning for Rider's first run of the road trip. Lipinski had two hits in the doubleheader after hitting a double in the first game of the series on Saturday. “He's swinging the bat pretty good,” Davis said.
Duke (9-1) tied the score at 1-1 with a pair of doubles in the seventh inning. “One run is not enough.” Davis said. “We had opportunities to score more but we didn't.”
Rider junior Vincenzo Aiello (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) pitched six shutout innings, striking out six while allowing just four hits. “Vinnie threw great,” Davis said. “He did everything he could do to give us a chance to win. With his pitch count and the fact that it was 32 degrees we took him out after six.”
Freshman Paul Sparano (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) pitched three innings of relief, allowing four hits.
In the second game a two-run single by junior James Locklear (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) cut the Duke lead to 4-2 in the fourth inning.
Two walks, two singles and a double gave Duke a 4-0 lead in the second inning. “The way we are scoring, four runs was enough,” Davis said.
The Broncs loaded the bases in the first inning but could not score.
Rider (2-5) plays at Delaware Thursday.
