Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Game
HAMDEN, Conn.—The Rider University women's basketball team lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at first place Quinnipiac University on Saturday afternoon.
Quinnipiac (20-3, 12-0 MAAC) led wire to wire and won its 10th straight game 96-54.
“There is a reason Quinnipiac is undefeated in the conference,” said head coach Lynn Milligan. “We just have to regroup and get ready for the next game. They are a terrific team and have a lot of fire power.”
Rider (7-16, 4-9 MAAC) hung with the Bobcats for the opening six minutes of the game and trailed only 12-9, four points by freshman Kamila Hoskova (Czech Republic). Hoskova led the Broncs with a career-high 15 points in 18 minutes.
“Kam has been doing a great job and she just plays,” Milligan said.
Quinnipiac responded with a 16-0 run, holding Rider scoreless for over eight minutes to increase its lead to 28-9 with 8:17 left in the opening half.
“They are a good team,” Milligan said about the Bobcats. “When they get on a little bit of a run, they know how to score.”
The Bobcats put three players in double-digits, led by Samantha Guastella with 15 points and six rebounds.
Back to back baskets by freshman Jessie Wallace (Reading, Pa./Wilson) helped cut the Bobcat lead to 30-14 before a 7-0 run pushed the lead to 25 (43-18) with 2:31 left before intermission. Wallace finished with nine points off the bench.
“I thought Jessie gave us some nice minutes as well,” Milligan added.
Quinnipiac led 47-23 at the half.
Rider was out-shot 48 percent to 33 percent and the Bobcats held a 47-27 advantage on the glass.
Quinnipiac hit nine three-pointers with Rider going 1-8 from long distance.
Quinnipiac improved to 11-0 at home.
This was the fourth meeting between Rider and Quinnipiac with the Bobcats winning for the fourth time.
The teams meet in Lawrenceville on February 26.
After winning four of five games, Rider has lost two straight.
Rider hosts Saint Peter's on Tuesday at 7pm in a game that was snowed out January 26.
