Duke University 1, Rider University 0 (11 innings)
DURHAM, NC—The Broncs lost a pitcher's duel at Duke Saturday afternoon. “We had a good pitcher's duel today,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis. “It is just disappointing we didn't score any runs. If you like pitching duels you would have enjoyed this one.”
Duke (7-1) scored the only run of the game with a two-out single in the 11th inning after a hit batter and a single. “You can only dodge so many bullets,” Davis said. “Eventually somebody is going to score.”
Rider (2-3) senior Zach Mawson (Magnolia, DE/Caesar Rodney) pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out a career-high seven batters. “Mawson threw great,” Davis said. “He kept them off balance and was able to throw strikes. He kept the ball down. He was in command of the game, he controlled the game. He did a great job for us.”
For Rider senior Eric Strano (Robbinsville), senior Nick Richter (Fox River Grove, Ill./Cary-Grove), senior Justin Thomas (Richboro, PA/Council Rock South), junior Lee Lipinski (Glen Arm, MD/Calvert), and senior Mike Parsons (Liverpool, NY) collected hits.
“We played great defense,” Davis said, “and that kept us in the game. We just need to execute offensively. We had some opportunities today, we had our chances, but we let it get away. Twice we tried to sacrifice bunt and couldn't get the bunt down.”
Rider and Duke will play a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 12 noon.
