LOUDONVILLE, NJ—Rider sophomore Jose Aguinaga (Madrid, Spain) scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead Rider to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory at Siena Saturday afternoon. “It was an amazing game,” said Rider head coach Charlie Inverso.
The victory was Rider's fourth on the road this year (4-2), already more than last year (3-5-2).
In the 105th minute Aguinaga headed in a pass from senior Justin Veltri (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) for the Golden Goal. “Veltri got down the flank and crossed it in,” Inverso said. “Jose's goal was world-class. It was the kind of goal you see in the top leagues in the world.”
Aguinaga scored to tie the game at 2-2 with just 4:45 left in the second half on an assist from sophomore Matt Crust (Redcar and Cleveland, England/Ohio State). “Jose came up really big for us,” Inverso said.
Aguinaga has three goals in the last two games and now shares the team lead with four goals.
Rider (7-4-1, 2-2-1- MAAC) took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minutes of play on a header by Veltri off a pass from junior Adrien Huss (Madrid, Spain).
“After we scored the first goal Siena had the better of the play for most of regulation,” Inverso said.
Siena (4-7-2, 3-2-0 MAAC) tied the score at 1-1 in the 14th minute. “Siena is a good team,” Inverso said. 'This was a big character road win for us.”
The Saints took a 2-1 lead with just 12 minutes remaining in the second half.
Siena out-shot Rider 21-17. “I was disappointed the way we played for 80 minutes but we found a way to win,” Inverso said. “That's a good sign.”
Rider senior goalkeeper Ryan Baird (Plainfield, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) made seven saves, including a penalty kick. “Baird came up really big,” Inverso said. Baird is now 4-1 on the season.
The Broncs beat Siena 6-1 last year at Rider, their first win over the Saints since 2004. The last time Rider traveled to Loudonville Siena won 3-2 in 2013.
Siena holds a 10-7-4 advantage in the series that began in 1997.
Rider travels to Niagara for a Wednesday afternoon game.
