Davidson College 2, Rider University 1
DAVIDSON, N.C.—Senior Dezarae Fillmyer (Roebling, N.J./Florence) scored her fourth goal of the season but it wasn't enough as the Rider University field hockey team lost 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Davidson.
“It's been the same story for the first three games of the season,” said head coach Lori Hussong. “It's not for the lack of effort or scoring opportunities. We need to stay composed and finish the plays. Once we get that first offensive goal, the rest will fall into place.”
Fillmyer converted her fourth penalty stroke of the 2014 season when Rider (1-2) was awarded the penalty as time expired.
Davidson (1-2) got on the board 13 minutes into the game and the Wildcats scored with just under 20 minutes remaining for the two-goal lead.
Rider out-shot Davidson 13-11, including 10-5 in the second half but the Broncs could only get four penalty corners.
“It wasn't our best effort as far as playing as a cohesive unit but they are trying,” Hussong added. “We just need more experience playing together as a group.”
Junior Joelle Prettyman (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) had three saves.
This was the third meeting between Davidson and Rider in field hockey. The Wildcats won 3-2 in double overtime over the Broncs in the 2005 season opener and Rider won over Davidson during the 2000 season.
Rider stays in North Carolina to face Appalachian State on Sunday.
“Appalachian State has a new turf surface and it is fast,” Hussong said. “It is nice that we can get right back out there and fix some of the errors we made today and do a better job. It's going to be a tough game.”
