Iona College 10, Rider University 3

Iona College 3, Rider University 2 (12 innings)

NEW ROCHELLE, NY—The Broncs had a long day at Iona Thursday.  Rider lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader, playing 21 innings. “It was a long day,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.

In the second game the Gaels (13-30, 9-14 MAAC) scored the game-winner in the 12th inning on a two-out double and an RBI single.  “The second game was pitched very well,” Davis said.

Rider took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by junior Eric Strano (Robbinsville).  “We competed in the second game,” Davis said.

Freshman Josh Sharik (Ewing, NJ/Plumstead Christian) pitched five and one-third innings of scoreless relief. “Once again Sharik did a great job,” Davis said. “He has been consistent and has earned the innings that he's got this year.”

In the first game Iona scored three runs in the third inning and broke the game open with five runs in the fifth inning. “You can't give up eight runs in two innings,” Davis said.

The Broncs committed five errors in the first game. “It almost got to the point of being comical,” Davis said of Rider's defense. “When you get into a rut like we're in it is hard to get out.”

Rider got on the board in the seventh inning when senior Ken Kremer (Hershey, PA/Hershey) doubled and scored on an RBI single by Parsons.

The Broncs (15-33, 6-15 MAAC) scored two runs in the ninth inning when Kremer doubled again and scored on a two-run double by Parsons for the final score.

Kremer had three of Rider's 10 hits and Parsons had two. Kremer had four hits on the day.

Senior Nick Crescenzo (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) had three hits on the day and now has 207 career hits,

Three Rider seniors, Crescenzo, Kremer and senior Kyle Kennett (Spring Lake, NJ/St. Rose) will graduate tomorrow.

The third game of the series is scheduled for 5pm on Saturday, the season finale for Rider. “It's one of those years, and we're going to learn from it,” Davis said of the Broncs' season, the first without making the playoffs since 2007.
