PISCATAWAY, NJ—Despite out-hitting the host Scarlet Knights, the Rider Broncs lost at Rutgers Tuesday afternoon. “We did swing the bat okay,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis, “we just can't put everything together.”

For Rider (11-23) junior Nick Richter (Fox River Grove, Ill./Cary-Grove) had three of Rider's nine hits and scored twice.   “He's been consistent,” Davis said of his leadoff third baseman.

Richter singled and scored for the first two runs of the game, in the first and third innings. In the third inning he singled, stole second, stole third and scored on a ground out.

Richter now has 26 stolen bases in 30 attempts, fourth best in the nation.

Rutgers (19-18) scored four runs in the third inning on three hits and two walks and a wild pitch to take a 4-2 lead and led 5-3 in the fourth. “You can't give up four runs in an inning like we did today,” Davis said. “That is what did it.”

Rider freshman Tyler Kaiser (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) hit an RBI triple to cut the Rutgers lead to 5-4 in the sixth inning. “Kaiser swung the bat,” Davis said.  “He did his job.”

Kaiser and sophomore James Locklear (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) each had two hits.

Rider senior Nick Crescenzo (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) had two RBI. Junior Greg Fazio (Far Hills/Ridge) doubled for the Broncs.

The Broncs got an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 4-3.

The Broncs defeated Rutgers 9-3 last year at Rider.

Rider lost 5-0 the last time the Broncs played at Rutgers and also lost at Rutgers in 2010. Rider and Rutgers did not meet in 2011. Rider beat Rutgers in 2009 at Rider. Rutgers leads the all-time series, which began in 1961, 39-27.

Rider hosts Princeton Wednesday at 3:30pm. “If we play like we played today we may lose again,” Davis said.
