LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—The Rider tennis season came to an end Monday with a loss to Loyola University. “The weather was fine, we had a nice crowd, everything was perfect,” said Rider head coach Ed Torres, “except that we lost two matches.”
For the Rider women (1-17) junior Alison Noll (Monmouth Junction/South Brunswick) took the Greyhounds' number one player to three sets in a two-hour match that was tied at 4-4 in the third set.
“Alison gives everyone a good match and she did that again today,” Torres said of his number one player. “She had an opportunity to win today against a very good player who has been their number one for three years. It was very even today. A shot or two goes the other way and Alison wins. She can hold her own with anybody.”
For the Rider men (1-20) freshman Matthew Begley (Pennington/Hopewell Valley Central) won five games at sixth singles and freshman Chanton Phan (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) won three games at second singles.
“Loyola is traditionally a good team,” said Torres, who completes his 19th season at Rider. “They moved to the Patriot League and brought in some high level recruits and are better than they were last year. But everyone on our team improved a little bit this year as well.”
