LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider University women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season, sweeping the Terriers from St. Francis Brooklyn in a non-conference match on Tuesday afternoon.

The Rider men almost made it a doubleheader win but fell to the Terriers 4-3.

“We used our experience to lead us to the victory on the women's side,” said head coach Ed Torres.  “The men's side was a very competitive match.  We could have won if we had done better in the doubles play.  We needed that point to win the match.”

For the Rider women, junior Alison Noll (Monmouth Junction/South Brunswick) won 6-0, 6-0 at first singles with freshman Kerrin Toner (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) scoring a 6-0, 6-0 win at third singles.

Noll and Toner teamed up for an 8-0 victory at first doubles.

Junior Michelle Caravaglio (Manalapan/Freehold) won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles with freshman Alexandria Extejt (Winnie, Texas/East Chambers) scoring a 6-2, 6-2 victory at fourth singles.

Caravaglio and Extejt teamed up for an 8-0 win at second doubles.

Junior Leonora Paul (Hackensack) won 6-0, 6-0 at fifth singles and senior Kim Leder (Sicklerville/Timber Creek) won 6-0, 6-0 at six singles with both teaming up for an 8-1 win at third doubles.

For the Bronc men, freshman Adam Levin (Princeton Junction/Pennington School) was awarded the win at fourth singles 4-6, 6-0 when his opponent retired, freshman Matthew Begley (Pennington/Hopewell Valley Central) was victorious at fifth singles (6-0, 6-1) and freshman Ed Chogllo (South River) scored a 7-5, 6-1 victory at sixth singles.

“Matt did well, winning both on the singles and doubles side,” Torres said.  “He was on his game.  He keeps the ball alive and is directing his shots.  His top spin is allowing him to place the ball accurately.  He is also going into the net and volleying well.”

Begley and senior Sean Sweeney (Franklinville/Delsea Regional) teamed up for an 8-0 win at third doubles.

Both the Rider men and women host Rutgers Camden at 2:00pm on April 4.
