JERSEY CITY, NJ—Rider lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Saint Peter's Sunday. “We didn't make any plays,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis, who saw Rider's four-game winning streak end with a three-game skid. “We're just not playing real well right now.”
The Peacocks (11-21, 5-6 MAAC) broke open a 2-1 game in the eighth inning with four runs on five hits and a walk to take a 6-1 lead.
Rider junior Justin Thomas (Richboro, PA/Council Rock South) singled and eventually scored on an error in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 2-1.
Saint Peter's took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on a walk, a stolen base and a double.
A double and a two-out single gave the Peacocks a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
For Rider (9-20, 3-4 MAAC) sophomore James Locklear (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) doubled. Senior Nick Crescenzo (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) collected his 195th career hit, moving up to 14th most ever at Rider.
Rider junior Kurt Sowa (Bensalem, PA/Fr. Judge) pitched five and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out seven. “We didn't make the plays behind him,” Davis said.
Rider had won 14 of the last 16 games against Saint Peter's before losing the series three games to none. “They are pretty good,” Davis said. “They out-hustled us, they out-pitched us, and they out-hit us. They played with more enthusiasm and they beat us.”
Rider hosts former Northeast Conference rival Wagner Wednesday. “We are going to have to win our way into the (MAAC) playoffs,” Davis said. “We have some problems to solve.”
