LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—The defending champion Hawks defeated Rider in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Wednesday evening as part of the hOURglass Rivalry.
Monmouth (14-4, 8-1 MAAC) scored off of a rebound in the 19th minute of play.
Rider (10-5-2, 5-3-2 MAAC) was led by sophomore goalkeeper Bethany-May Howard (Glastonbury, England/Bridgwater College), who made 11 saves.
“Beth was fantastic,” Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome. “She made some really great saves.”
Freshman Briyanna Femia (Hamilton, N.J. /Steinert) played the final 12 minutes of the game and made two saves.
The first place Hawks, who are ranked eighth in the Region, out-shot Rider 26-4. The victory was the eighth in a row for Monmouth.
The Broncs were playing without their top two scorers, junior Tara Ballay (Delran, NJ/Delran) and sophomore Michelle Iacono (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun), who were out with injuries. “We've got quite a few players injured right now,” Hounsome said, “but the other players came in and showed that we have a good squad.”
The last two times Rider played Monmouth the Broncs lost 3-0.
“We played everybody today,” Hounsome said, “which was great.”
It was the final regular season home game for four seniors; Becca Kape (Westfield, NJ/Westfield), Katrina Seidenthal (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep), Kristen Clarke (Mastic, NY/Eastport South Manor) and Daisy Allen (Portsmouth, England/Bristol Academy). “We played the seniors as many minutes as they could hold and they played excellent.”
Since MAAC members Rider, Saint Peter's and Monmouth are all about an hour from each other, the three-way rivalry between them is called the hOURglass Rivalry, with the emphasis on OUR, as in this is OUR Rivalry.
Rider and Monmouth have now met 14 times since the series began in 1999, with the Hawks holding a 9-2-3 advantage in the series. The last time Rider defeated Monmouth was during the 2003 season.
Rider is the fourth seed and will now host the fifth seed, Siena, in the first round of the six-team MAAC Championship Tournament Saturday at 7pm.
