WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ?The Broncs saw their four-game winning streak snapped with a goal in the final eight minutes of the game, dropping a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Monmouth Wednesday night.
“Monmouth was better than us tonight,” said Rider head coach Charlie Inverso.? “They are a very good team. The way they played tonight, they are the best team we've seen this year.”
Monmouth (7-3-5, 3-1-4 MAAC) scored off of a corner kick in the 83rd minute of play.
Monmouth out-shot Rider (8-6-2, 5-4 MAAC) 13-12.
Rider sophomore goalkeeper David Pastuna (Robbinsville, NJ) made one save.
The Hawks came into the game on a four-game winless streak (0-1-3) and have had four 0-0 ties this year.
Since MAAC members Rider, Saint Peter's and Monmouth are all about an hour from each other, the three-way rivalry between them is called the hOURglass Rivalry, with the emphasis on OUR, as in this is OUR Rivalry.
Rider entered the game number one in the nation in goals scored with 38. “Tonight was not one of our sharper nights,” Inverso said.
Rider closes out the regular season at Marist Saturday evening. “We think we have to win that game to make the playoffs,” Inverso said.? “We'll be ready.? I feel good about our chances going up there Saturday.”
