Tennis Splits with St. Francis Brooklyn

College Tennis
Women: Rider University 5, St. Francis (Brooklyn) 2
Men: St. Francis (Brooklyn) 4, Rider University 3

LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider University women's tennis team defeated the Terriers of St. Francis Brooklyn in a non-conference match on Wednesday afternoon.

The women won 5-2 with the Bronc men falling 4-3.

“The women played a great match,” said head coach Ed Torres.  “We've played a really tough schedule and today, we were matched up more evenly with an opponent and we used our experience to win the match.  St. Francis had a strong number one player but otherwise we handled the other matches.”

For the Rider women, sophomore Michelle Caravaglio (Manalapan/Freehold) won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles, freshman Cynthia Vlad (Annandale/North Hunterdon) won 6-0, 6-0 at fourth singles, sophomore Leonora Paul (Hackensack) was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at fifth singles and sophomore Samantha Troxell (Mays Landing/Buena Regional HS) scored a 6-1, 6-0 victory at sixth singles.

In doubles play, Caravaglio teamed up with senior Marly Roche (Sussex/High Point Regional) for an 8-5 win at first doubles with Vlad and senior Alexa Manforti (Toms River/Toms River HS South) posting an 8-0 win at second doubles.  Senior Jaclyn Giameo (Roselle Park) and sophomore Annette Frankowski (Kearny) won the third doubles match by an 8-0 score.

In the men's match, both teams split the singles matches with the competition coming down to the doubles point and the Terriers won all three matches to clinch the victory.

“The men's match came down to the doubles point,” Torres said.  “We didn't have our full compliment out there for the doubles play due to an academic commitment and you saw on the singles side that with the full team there, we hung right with St. Francis.  It was an exciting match and an even match that unfortunately, didn't fall our way.”

Sophomore Stephen Brand (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) won 7-5, 6-1 at second singles, senior Ryan Carpenter (Sahuarita, Ariz./Sahuarita) was a winner at fourth singles 6-7 (4), 6-3, 10-2 and senior Matt DiMartino (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy)  posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory at fifth singles.

The Rider men host Philadelphia University on Thursday.
