LAWRENCEVILLE—Both the Rider University men's and women's tennis teams lost a non-conference match to Mount St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon.

Mount St. Mary's won the men's match 7-0 and the women's match 6-1.

For the Rider women, junior Alison Noll (Monmouth Junction/South Brunswick) won at first singles, 4-6, 6-3, 10-3 and teamed up with freshman Kerrin Toner (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) for an 8-4 win at first doubles.  Noll is now 6-5 this season in singles play.

“As usual, the star of the day was Alison Noll,” said head coach Ed Torres.  “Alison and Kerrin won the doubles and she played a good number one player from the Mount and won the 10-point tiebreaker in the third set.  She has six wins and was in all 11 singles matches that she played this fall.”

For the Rider men, senior Sean Sweeney (Franklinville/Delsea) won six games at fifth singles before losing 6-4, 6-2 and freshman Ed Choglio (South River) also won six games at sixth singles before losing 6-2, 6-4.

“The men's match, the scores didn't look too competitive but we are keeping the ball alive a little bit more,” said Torres.  “The improvement is very slow and we are still losing because we are facing more experienced teams.”

The doubles team of seniors Rollie Malfitano (Wenonah/Gloucester Catholic) and Nick Lubold (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) won six games at first doubles before losing 8-6.

“Our doubles play is much better,” Torres said.  “We are going to the net more and winning more points at the net with volleys.”

This was the last match for the Bronc women this fall.  The Rider men complete the fall season on October 27 against Drexel.

“The women had a tough season,” Torres added.  “Everyone is trying to play a steadier game.  They are making improvements but that is hard to measure over a short period of time.  As we gain more years of experience on the court, the results will improve.”
