Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Match
BUFFALO, N.Y.--The Rider University volleyball team was swept at Canisius College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match on Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Griffins (7-7) improved to 4-0 in the MAAC with a 25-17, 25-20, 25-23 win over Rider (6-6, 0-3 MAAC).
"We played well in spurts," said head coach Christopher Feliciano. "We are still lacking that consistent effort from beginning to end. We forced Canisius into a lot of errors and even though we got swept, we were in the driver's seat for the majority of the match; we just didn't finish."
For the Broncs, senior Brittany Gajewski (Whitehouse Station/Hunterdon Central Regional) had 17 digs with sophomore Kayla Wong (Tustin, Calif./Arnold O. Beckman) adding nine digs and four blocks. Gajewski now has 953 digs in her career at Rider.
Sophomore Ashlee Amatulli (Menifee, Calif./Temecula Valley) had 19 assists and four digs for Rider.
The Broncs were out-hit .200 to .147.
Rider held an 18-10 lead in the third set with Canisius ending the match on a 15-5 run.
Canisius is 20-3 all-time against Rider and the Golden Griffins have won 13 in a row over the Broncs.
"We had a huge lead in the third set," said Feliciano. "We are still learning how to beat the top teams in the conference. When we get a lead, we can't be satisfied, we have to put the set away and believe that we can do these things and be successful. It requires extra effort, all the time."
The Broncs travel to Manhattan for a MAAC match Wednesday evening.
"All of the MAAC matches, we've been in the match," Feliciano said. "If we continue to play with that effort, I think we will be successful Wednesday at Manhattan."
Rider returns to Alumni Gymnasium September 29 and 30 when the Broncs host Fairfield and Iona in a pair of MAAC matches, beginning at 1pm.
