STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.-Both the Rider University men's and women's tennis teams played St. Francis (NY) on Staten Island with the Bronc women winning and the Rider men losing on Thursday afternoon in rain shortened matches.

"We had a more experienced team on the women's side," said head coach Ed Torres.  "Sometimes we are on the other side of those scores so any win is a good win."

For the Rider women, junior Marly Roche (Sussex/High Point Regional) won at first singles 6-1, 6-3, senior Tricia Ashmore (Sparta) won at second singles (6-0, 6-0) and freshman Michelle Caravaglio (Manalapan/Freehold) won 6-0, 6-0 at third singles.

Also for the Bronc women, senior Allison Clay (East Brunswick) was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at fourth singles, junior Jaclyn Giameo (Roselle Park) won 6-0, 6-0 at fifth singles and freshman Samantha Troxell  (Mays Landing/Buena) was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at number six singles.

"Allison did well in her match," Torres said about his fourth singles player.  "She wasn't feeling well but battled through."

For the Rider men, junior Ryan Carpenter (Sahuarita, Ariz./Sahuarita) lost the first set at number four singles 6-2 but was declared the winner when his opponent had to retire due to an injury.

"The men's team is hurting due to injuries," said Torres.  "We have a few guys playing 'up' in the lineup.  But give St. Francis (NY) credit, they had more experience and played a better match."

Neither team was able to complete the doubles matches due to heavy rain that swept through the area.

Both the Rider men's and women's tennis teams host Niagara University on Saturday in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match.
