Campbell University 13, Rider University 10
BUIES CREEK, NC-The Broncs scored five runs in the eighth inning but it was not enough as Rider lost at Campbell Tuesday night. "I don't think we played very well today," said Rider head coach Barry Davis. "We did some good things today but not enough to win."
Rider out-hit the Camels 15-13. "We hit well enough to win," Davis said, "but we didn't hit well enough in RBI situations. We left 11 runners on base."
Trailing 13-5, Rider (5-8) scored five runs in the eighth inning on five hits, including a three-run double by freshman Mike Parsons (Liverpool, NY), to cut the lead to 13-10. "There are plenty of things to draw positives from," Davis said, "but there were too many negative things that caused us to lose."
Parsons, the MAAC Rookie of the Week last week, had three hits and five RBI on the day.
Campbell (14-3) scored six runs in the seventh inning to take a 13-5 lead. "The seventh inning got away from us," Davis said. "It's hard to come back down seven runs."
Rider junior Adam Wayman (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) led off the third inning with a double and scored on a double by freshman Greg Fazio (Far Hills/Ridge) to cut the lead to 6-5. Fazio had three hits and Wayman had two hits.
Campbell cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the first inning on one hit, two hit batsman and a Rider error, and scored four runs on six hits in the second inning to take a 6-4 lead. "They (Campbell) swung the bats well," Davis said.
Parsons and sophomore Ken Kremer (Hershey, PA/Hershey) both hit two-run singles in the first inning to give the Broncs a 4-0 lead.
Sophomore Jerry Mulderig (Langhorne, PA/Council Rock South) entered the game in the eighth inning and had two hits, a double and a triple.
The Broncs used six different pitchers. Junior Sean Kuberiet (Branchburg/Somerville) entered the game in the fourth inning and held Campbell down for three innings. "His line does not look that good (5 runs in 3.1 innings pitched) but it is not indicative of how he pitched," Davis said. "He pitched well but we had to leave him in longer than we should have so not to burn up the bullpen. He shut them down for three innings. I thought he pitched really well."
The Camels have now won nine straight.
Rider plays Campbell again Wednesday evening before traveling to Rock Hill, South Carolina to take on Winthrop University in a three game series beginning Friday night.
