Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Match

RIVERDALE, N.Y.--Despite winning the opening set, the Rider University volleyball team lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match at Manhattan Sunday afternoon.

The Jaspers won 24-26, 25-21, 25-22, 25-23.

"We allowed Manhattan to go on too many runs today," said head coach Christopher Feliciano.  "We came back a bunch of times today and that's a positive but when you get down by so many points, a four or five point run doesn't do a lot for you.  We need to play with more consistency."

For Rider (4-12, 2-3 MAAC), freshman Kayla Wong (Tustin, Calif./Arnold O. Beckman) had 16 kills and seven digs with junior Stephanie Nagy (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) adding 14 kills and four blocks while hitting .433.

Also for the Broncs, freshman Jaclyn Webber (Anaheim, Calif./Canyon) had 13 kills and 10 digs, sophomore Bridget Sheerin (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist) had 24 assists and 14 digs with sophomore Meghan Bartsch (Cranford) adding 16 assists.

"Stephanie and Jaclyn both played a good balanced match, both offensively and defensively," said Feliciano.  "Steph was able to move the ball around.  We've been working with our hitters to spray the ball at multiple angles and you saw some of that today from both of them."

Freshman Shelbie Stannard (Alvin, Texas/Alvin) had a match high 21 digs on Sunday for the Broncs.

Manhattan out-hit Rider .250 to .217.

The match featured 24 ties and eight lead changes.

Manhattan leads the all-time series 22-4 and the Broncs haven't defeated the Jaspers since the 2004 season.  Manhattan defeated the Broncs three times last season including twice by 3-2 scores.

"At this point, we need to get wins," Feliciano said.  "Being close is good for the growth of the team but winning is ultimately better.  We are playing good volleyball and now we just need to finish the matches.  We are putting up a good fight each time out and now we need to put our nose to the grindstone and get the victory."

Rider hosts La Salle on Wednesday at 7pm.

"We're going to get right back at it, get some video and game plan for another tough Atlantic 10 opponent," Feliciano said about the match on Wednesday.
