Md.—The Rider University men's and women's tennis teams opened up the
2011 spring schedule with a loss at Loyola Maryland in a Metro Atlantic
Athletic Conference match Saturday afternoon in Baltimore.
For
the Rider men, the second doubles team of sophomore Drew Laverty (Mount
Royal/Kingsway Regional) and senior Chris Esposito (Ocean
Grove/Neptune) won 8-3.
“Loyola has a very, very good men's team,” said head coach Ed Torres. “For Drew and Chris to defeat their number one and number three guys, they played very well. Overall on both sides, Loyola was too experienced for us. We really have only practiced a few times a week for about six weeks and that was indoors.”
For
the Rider women, sophomore Marly Roche (Sussex/High Point Regional) won
four games at number one singles before losing 6-0, 6-4.
“It was very cold,” Torres added. “The weather was a factor but we also could have played a little better. Both the Loyola men and women were strong and experienced.”
The Bronc men host Fordham on Tuesday at 3pm. The Rider women host Lafayette on Wednesday at 3pm.
