Rider at Binghamton Open
Resnick Champion
BINGHAMTON, NY-Junior Jim Resnick (Media, Pa./Penncrest) won 5-4 on a tie breaker over John-Martin Cannon of UB in the finals to win the 174 pound weight class at the Binghamton Open Sunday. "Jim had a great tournament," said Rider head coach Gary Taylor.
In the quarterfinals Resnick pinned Caleb Wallace of Binghamton in 1:34 and defeated Billy George of Cornell 3-2 in the semifinals. Resnick defeated Cody Hutcheson of Cornell 11-5 in the pigtail at 174 and Ricky McDonald of Brown 3-0.
Freshman Donald McNeil (Plainville, Mass./Wyoming Seminary) placed fifth, winning four of six matches. "He's just a freshman and keeps getting better," Taylor said.
McNeil lost 4-1 to James Fox of Harvard but came back to pin Matt Lowe of Hofstra in 3:09 for fifth place..McNeil lost 6-1 in the first round at 197. In consolations McNeil pinned Sam Morrison in 2:30 and pinned Kurt Brendel of Princeton in 2:31.
Senior Jimmy Kirchner (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) placed sixth at 141, winning four of seven bouts. "Kirchner looked better," Taylor said. "He's had some hard-fought matches."
Kirchner lost 8-5 to Adam Krop of Princeton, who finished third. Kirchner was pinned in the first round at 141 and came back to pin Ryan Dunphy of Cornell in 6:18. Kirchner then defeated Joe Bonaldi of Binghamton 9-4, Ryan Hunsberger of Mason 10-2 and Chris Villalonga of Cornell 11-3.
Sophomore Ramon Santiago (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville) placed sixth winning four of seven matches. "Ramon beat some good people," Taylor said.
Santiago lost 10-3 in the first round at 157 before pinning Chris Dowdy of FLWC in 3:24. Santiago then defeated Billy Bonnette of Middlesex 5-0, pinned Adam Morris of Binghamton in 1:21 and pinned Justin Accordino of Hofstra in 0:56.
Sophomore Evan Craig (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) went 3-2. "Evan wrestled much better today," Taylor said. "He's got more experience now and is wrestling like it. He's going to keep getting better too."
In the quarterfinals Craig lost 3-2 on a tie-breaker to David Ng of Harvard. In the consolations Craig pinned Bobby Grogan in 5:22 before being pinned by Maciej Jochym of Cornell in 2:34. Craig defeated Charles Lear of Gannon 4-2 in the pigtails at heavyweight before defeating Oney Snyder of Cornell 7-3.
Freshman Vinny Fava (Elmwood Park, N.J./Elmwood Park) went 3-2. Fava won 6-4 over Rich Lauarato of Mason in the first round at 133 before losing 4-0 to Joe Stanzione of Cornell. In consolations Fava defeated Andrew Poidore of Sacred Heart 4-2 in o.t. and defeated Adam Weinell of Gannon 7-4 before losing 2-1 to Jamie Franco of Hofstra.
Sophomore James Brundage (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) went 3-2. Brundage lost 5-0 in the first round at 165. In consolations Brundage defeated Duke Pickett of FLWC 1-0, defeated Ian Roy of Harvard 6-2 and advanced on a medical forfeit before losing to Marshall Peppelman of Cornell 13-0.
Freshman Clint Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) went 3-2. Morrison won 6-1 in the pigtails at 184 before losing 4-2 to Ben Clymer of Hofstra. In consolations Morrison defeated Jason Laboranti 2-1 on a tie breaker and pinned Brandon Vorrius of Brown in 6:41 before being pinned by Erich Smith of Penn in 1:50.
Junior Mark Maestrey (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River South) went 2-2. Maestrey pinned Joe Barbato of Harvard (4:25) and pinned Chris Rodriguez of Mason (2:15) in consolations before being pinned by Garrett Frey of Princeton in 1:23. Maestrey lost 11-0 in the 125 pigtail.
Sophomore Chuck Zeisloft (Woodbury Heights, N.J./Gateway) went 2-2. Zeisloft defeated Tyler Biscaha of Cornell 7-3 and Derek Steeley of Binghamton 7-3 in consolations before losing to Caleb Richardson of FLWC 4-1. Zeisloft lost 5-3 in the pigtail at 125
Junior Brandon Lintner (Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands Regional) went 2-2. In the pigtails at 165, Lintner lost 4-1 before defeating Robert Blotzer of Gannon 3-2 in consolations. He then pinned Brandon Bright of Hofstra in 1:20 before losing 2-0 to Craig Scott.
Senior Aaron Nestor (Transfer, Pa./Reynolds) went 2-2. Nestor lost 2-1 in the first round at 149. In consolations Nester defeated Justin Belanger of Sacred Heart 6-1 and pinned Ben Price of Binghamton in 2:41 before losing to Stephen Robertson of Penn 4-1.
Freshman Greg Velasco (Union Beach, NJ/Keyport) went 0-2. Velasco lost 10-2 in the first round at heavyweight. In consolations Velasco lost 6-1 to Bobby Grogan of Princeton.
Freshman Rob Cigna (Morganville, NJ/St. John Vianney) went 2-2. Cigna lost 6-1 in the first round at 133 before winning twice in consolations, 10-2 over Brett Henderson of Cornell and 9-3 over Jesse Wolfe of Gannon before losing 10-5 to Patrick Hunter of Binghamton.
Freshman Jeff McElwee (Cedar Run, NJ/Southern Regional) went 1-2. McElwee won by fall (1:11) in the pigtail at 165 before losing 12-1. In consolations McElwee lost 6-5 to Brandon Bright of Hofstra.
Freshman Frank Crocco (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley) went 0-2. Crocco was pinned in the first round at 157 and lost 6-1 in consolations.
Sophomore Franklin Miele (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) went 0-2. Miele lost 8-0 in the pigtail at 165. In the consolations Miele lost 8-4.
Sophomore Chris Spagnola (Monroe Township, N.J./St. John Vianney) went 0-2, losing by fall in the first round at 184 before losing 8-1 in consolations.
Freshman Dylan Hetzer (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan) went 0-2. Hetzer lost 13-1 in the first round at 133 and was pinned in the consolations.
Freshman Matt Sausman (Burlington, NJ/Camden Catholic) went 0-2. Sausman was pinned in the first round at 133 and was pinned again in consolations.
Rider hosts Princeton (3pm) and Wisconsin (7pm) on Friday. "They are both good teams," Taylor said. "We're going to have to put it together and wrestle very well."
