Rider University 6, Wagner College 1
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.--The Rider University women's tennis team posted its third win of the fall with a 6-1 non-conference victory over Wagner Saturday afternoon.
"We played pretty steady tennis today," said head coach Ed Torres. "We battled very windy conditions."
For Rider, junior Marly Roche (Sussex/High Point Regional) won 6-1, 6-0 at first singles with senior Tricia Ashmore (Sparta) posting a 6-4, 6-1 win at second singles. Roche and Ashmore teamed up for an 8-3 win at first doubles.
"The season is winding down so it was good to get another win," said Ashmore. "My match at second singles went a little long in the first set. She was a steady player and played consistent and I had to try to match her."
"They kept the ball in play and didn't let the wind bother them," Torres added. "They played well and steady."
Also for the Broncs, freshman Michelle Caravaglio (Manalapan/Freehold) won 6-1, 6-0 at third singles, senior Danielle White (Reading, Pa./Reading) was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at fourth singles and junior Alexa Manforti (Toms River/Toms River HS South) was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at fifth singles.
Caravaglio and White teamed up for an 8-6 win at second doubles with Giameo and sophomore Kim Leder (Sicklerville/Timber Creek) winning 8-2 at third doubles.
The Broncs defeated Wagner twice last season, both by 7-0 scores.
"As a team, we are playing with more consistency," Ashmore added. "Our goal is to finish the next few weeks strong and take that momentum into the spring season."
"I agree with Tricia's assessment," Torres said. "I see improvement. Today, Marly also had a nice match at number one singles. She defeated a pretty strong player for Wagner. She was really on her game and played exceptionally well."
The Rider men face New Jersey Institute of Technology at 11am on Sunday in Lawrenceville.
The Rider women travel to Saint Peter's for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match October 18.
