Army 2, Rider University 0
WEST POINT, NY-The Broncs fell to the United States Military Academy Wednesday evening. "They basically got two goals on set pieces," said Rider head coach Russ Fager. "The majority of the game was played from 18 to 18."
Army (1-7) scored nine minutes into the game off of a corner kick and took a 2-0 lead in the ninth minute of the second half on a header. "The first we had a chance to stop," Fager said. "We had three guys right in front of the ball. It was a corner kick, the ball was served in and bounced around. The second goal was served into the box from about 40 yards out and one of their guys ran on it, dove and the ball skimmed off his head and into the back of the net."
The Black Knights out-shot Rider (1-7) 14-9 and held an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. "We had two or three quality chances," Fager said. "They did a good job of shutting down our attack. They didn't have much of an attack either."
Rider senior Jim Bradley (Washington Twp., N.J./Washington Township) had three shots for the Broncs and junior Sal Lubrano (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) had two. "Bradley and JB (junior Jonathan Burd of Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) both did a very good job in the middle," Fager said.
Rider sophomore goalkeeper Matt Perrella (North Brunswick, N.J./N. Brunswick) made six saves.
Rider defeated Army 3-2 last season for the first time in 13 meetings in the series that began in 1940.
Rider travels to our nation's capital to take on George Washington University Saturday afternoon. "We're going to go down there and see if we can get a win on the road," Fager said.
The GW game will be the final non-conference game of the season. "We're going to see if we can get ourselves ready for the conference," Fager said.
