Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Match

BUFFALO, N.Y.--The Rider University volleyball was sent to its 11th straight loss with Canisius sweeping the Broncs on Sunday in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match.

The Golden Griffins won 25-14, 25-14, 25-18.

"It was a rough weekend," said head coach Emily Ahlquist.

For Rider (1-12, 0-4 MAAC), senior Amanda Piccolini (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville) had 26 assists with freshman Megan Knott (West Caldwell/James Caldwell) adding nine kills, seven digs and two blocks.  Knott accounted for 10 of Rider's 36 offensive points.

"Meg is stepping into her own," Ahlquist said.  "She is still learning the speed and pace of Division I volleyball but she is gaining confidence and understanding of the game.  She just goes out and plays."

Tied at three in the opening set, Canisius (8-8, 4-0 MAAC) reeled off a 15-2 run to lead 18-5.  The Golden Griffins hit .414 in set one.

With Canisius leading 7-6 in the second set, a 9-3 run put the Golden Griffins ahead for good.  Rider cut the the Golden Griffin lead to 16-10 but could get no closer as Canisius ended the set winning nine of the final 13 points.

A 6-1 run in the third set turned a 6-5 Rider lead into an 11-7 deficit for the Broncs.  Rider got to within 16-15 before Canisius rebounded with another 6-1 run to clinch the set.  There were 10 ties and four lead changes during the match, including
five ties in the third set.

Also for the Broncs, senior Kristy Love (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) had eight kills and two blocks.

The Golden Griffins out-hit Rider .385 to .170.

Canisius defeated Rider 3-1 in Lawrenceville and 3-0 in Buffalo last season and the Golden Griffins have now won 16 of the 19 matches all-time against the Broncs including the last nine in a row.

The teams meet again in Lawrenceville October 16.

Rider travels to Iona for a MAAC match October 2 before returning home for a conference match against Siena on October 3.

"Iona will be a great atmosphere," Ahlquist said.  "They have a good group of fans and it should be a good, tough match.  And then we get home after three straight on the road so that will be nice as well when we host Siena.  We are always excited to play at home."
